Class Syllabus/Course Information

Course Description/Information:  English I (Resource) and Reading are courses that cover essential content in English, Language Arts, and Reading, but are accommodated to meet the individual needs of each learner.

Grading Policy*:

       70%-Major   20%- Daily   10%-Minor

*Grades are based on students' IEPs

Absences/Make-Up Work:  It is the student's responsibility to make-up all work due to absences.   Students are given the same number of days that they missed class to turn in their work.  Make up work can be found in the Make-Up Work folder.

Late Work:  See Oak Ridge High School campus policy.  This may vary for students depending on I.E.P. and ARD paperwork.

Lost Work:  It is the student’s responsibility to keep up with all assignments.    With the exception of homework, work is to be kept in a folder that remains in the classroom.    Replacements will not be given and lost work will count as a “0”.

Checking Grades Online:  Parents and students can view grades at any time.  Log-on to www.conroeisd.net, and click on the appropriate link for “Parent” or “Student” access.  A valid e-mail address is required to create an account.

Tutorials:   Students that need additional help or time on an assignment may schedule tutorials by appointment with the teacher.   Class work can also be completed in their Eagle's Nest or Study Skills classes.

Homework:  When homework is assigned, it is the student’s responsibility to complete assignments by the due date.   Homework includes any assignments not finished during class with a due date approaching.

Cell Phone Use Policy:  Cell phones may only be used at the teacher’s discretion for school related activities.

Vocabulary Assignments:  In order to meet the unique needs of my students, I have posted essential vocabulary terms on www.quizlet.com.  After accessing the site, type “mrburke2” under the search icon and select the appropriate set of terms.

Textbooks:  Students can access literature and material covered in class and review it at home to study for tests and quizzes. Go to www.pearsonsuccessnet.com. Click on returning user log in and use the following username and password to gain access:

Welcome to the 2016-1017 school year!  My name is Miguel Burke and I have the pleasure of serving as your child's English I (Resource) teacher.  I look forward to creating a positive relationship with each of my students as he/she grows academically.  I am dedicated to helping your son/daughter have a successful learning experience here in my class at Oak Ridge High School -9th Grade Campus.

Academic success requires parent involvement, and I am requesting your help.  I will be expecting all work assigned to be completed based on his/her I.E.P. requirements. Of course, all students do not work at the same pace. If your child does not complete an assignment in class, he/she will be required to complete it at home.   Students may also request additional help after school or during Eagle's Nest (ORHS's study hall).  I have included a syllabus that will explain the content, procedures, and expectations of my class.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.  I look forward to having a great year.

Sincerely,

Miguel Burke
